Lilla Rose March Special: Free Green U-Pin w/$50!
I don't know why I'm like this or what makes me a "crafty" person. I love creating with my hands so much I don't even have the words to express it.
My granny taught me to knit when I was around eight and we also did cross-stitch together. My friend taught me crochet in high school (entirely because I wanted to make doilies like the "proper" girls in Anne of Green Gables).
I tried a little quilt kit I got at a shop in Amish country PA but I didn't have the attention to detail and precision that I needed for it.
Quilts are so meditative to me. They're like mandalas.
I also thought I couldn't do garment sewing because when I was a kid my mom picked out some paper patterns for cabbage doll clothes and we planned to make them together but we never did. I realized only many years later that while I'm a crafty person, she is not. And just because she was intimidated by it didn't mean I had to be.
What really started me on the path I'm on now where I feel absolutely unstoppable in sewing was making doll clothes for my daughter.
Getting simple free patterns on YouTube for Baby Alive clothes and diapers helped me to learn the basics of clothing construction but I still had a blockage in my mind.
Then my older son asked when I was going to make something for him.
I had never made anything for a human before but I decided to give it a try. I took him to Joann's and he picked out the craziest blue shiney fabric for a set of both pants and shirt. He loved it, said he felt like the ocean. He was so proud I made him something.
That was only about a year ago but since then I've started making button up work shirts for my husband, hoodies for the kids, pajamas, Halloween costumes, dresses, and drafting my own clothes.
I also went back to quilting and I'm learning that attention to detail and precision is a skill I can work on!
I feel so good about my crafting and like nothing can hold me back.
Although my high school friend who taught me to crochet asked recently if I was up for recreating her favorite pants that had worn through. I said I would try and now I'm looking at welt back pockets and zipper fly covers with a teensy bit of fear.
